First Amendment
- Bars government form passing laws respecting an establishment of religion
- Bars governemt from prohibiting the free exercise of religion
- Bars government from abridging the freedom of speech
- Bars government from abridging the right to peacefully assemble
- Bars government from abridging the right to petition government for redress of grievance
Second Amendment
Bars government form infringing on the right to bear arms
Third Amendment
In peacetime, bars government form quartering soldiers in homes without an owners consent. During war, allows troops to be quartered in a manner prescribed by law.
Fourth Amendment
Bars government from violating the right against unreasonable searches and seizures. Requires probable cause, oath or affirmation, and particularly for the issuance of warrants.
Fifth Amendment
- Requires grand jury indictment for charges of capital of infamous charges.
- Bars government from trying a person twice for the same crime (double jeopardy)
- Bars government form compelling persons to testify against themselves in criminal cases.
- Bars government from depriving persons life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
- Bars government form taking private property for public use without just compensation
Sixth Amendment
- Provides accused persons with the right to a speedy, public, and jury trial in criminal cases
- Provides accused persons with the right to be notified of the criminal charges against them.
- Provides accused persons with the right to confront witnesses against them.
- Provides accused persons with the right to compel witnesses to appear on their behalf.
- Provides accused persons with the right to the assistance of legal counsel in criminal cases.
Seventh Amendment
- Provides the right to a jury trial in civil cases involving disputes valued over twenty dollars.
- Provides common law rules to be used when federal courts review common law suits
Eight Amendment
- Bars government from imposing excessive bail or fines

Ninth Amendment
Provides that the Constitution’s enumeration of specific rights should not be interpreted to deny other rights retained by the people. (This provision was inserted by the Framers to address the concerns that the rights listed in the Bill of Rights might be treated as the only individual liberties held by individuals. The Ninth amendment suggests that there are other liberties beyond those written in the Bill of Rights that are to be protected from government intrusion. For example- these include rights to privacy, travel, and marriage)
Tenth Amendment
Provides that all powers not given to the United States or taken from the states by the Constitution are reserved to the States or to the people.
