Chapter 8, difference between fat and sick Flashcards
Muscle take up glucose, more exercise means more muscle, and more muscle increases?
Insulin sensitivity
When does chronic metabolic disease start?
When fat deposits itself in organs such as muscles and especially the liver
A study showed that how many % of women and men who are categorized as normal on the basis of BMI are actually obese based on their carriage of visceral fat?
50% of women, 20% of men
What visible ways can you look for signs of increased metabolic status without looking at weight or size of a person?
Look at the back of neck, armpits and knuckles and look for a darkening, thickening and ridging of the skin (called acanthosis nigricans)
What is acanthosis nigricans?
A darkening thickening and ridging of skin. Which is excess insulin working on the skin (epidermal growth factor receptor). Which are visible signs of insulin resistance and future risk for chronic metabolic disease
What process is activated when you lose subcutaneous fat?
- Your leptin levels will fall 2. Your brain will sense starvation 3. Your brain will reduce the activity of your symphatetic nervous system 4. This will reduce your energy expenditure 5. This will make you feel lousy and activate your vagus nerve 6. Vagus nerve will drive up your apetite, insulin levels, and energy storage to replace what you’ve lost 7. You regain the visceral fat first 8. You’re screwed !
