Chapter 8 Chemical Bonding (Lewis Structures) Flashcards
What are the outermost electrons called?
Valence
-in the last shell # but can include s, p, & d
What is involved in atoms form chemical bonds?
Only the valence electrons
(Outer most)
What is the electron configuration of Li?
What is its outermost shell?
What is the group number that lithium is in?
Li 1s2 2s1
Outer most shell is 2s shell
Group # = # of valence electrons
What is the electron configuration of Beryllium?
How many valence electrons does it have?
Be 1s2 2s2
2 valence electrons
Lewis Dot Symbols
Carbon has four valance electrons, which means it has one on either side of it
Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons, which means it has one on each side of it & an additional 1 on the top
O = 6 valence 2 on top, 2 on left, 1 bottom 1 right
F=7valence 2on top, left, & bottom, 1 right
Ne=8 2 on each of 4 sides
