chapter 8 Flashcards
Emotion
- positive or negative experience that is associated with a particular pattern or physiological activity
- triggered by a physiological response
James Lange Theory
- stimuli trigger activity in autonomic nervous system then produces emotional experience in the brain
Slow path way
thalamus —> cortex —> amygdala
Emotion Regulation
- cognitive/behavioral strategies people use to influence their own emotional experience
behavioral strategies (avoiding situations that trigger unwanted emotion )
cognitive strategies ( trying not to think about the cause of unwated emotion )
Two factor theory
emotions are inferences about the causes of physiological arousal
The facial feedback hypothesis
emotional expressions can cause emotional experiences they signify
Zygomatic Major
contracts when smiling
Emotional expression
an observable sign of an emotional state
universality hypothesis
emotional expressions have the same meaning for everyone
display rules
norms for the control of emotional expression
fast pathway
thalamus—> amydala
cannon bard theory
stimulus triggers activity in the autonomic nervous system and emotional experience in the brain at the same time
amygdala
special role in producing emotions
appraisal
an evaluation of the emotion-relevant aspects of a stimulus
reappraisal
changing one’s emotional experience by changing the meaning of the emotion stimulus
two dimensions
valence: how positive/negative experience is
arousal: how active/passive the experience
Motivation
the purpose for or psychological cause of an action
Hedonic principle
people are motivated to experience pleasure and avoid pain
Instinct
natural tendency to seek a particular goal
Drive
an internal state caused by physiological needs
Marlow’s need
defferable need (top): need for self actualization
esteem needs
belongingness/love needs
safety/ security needs
Immediate needs (bottom): physiological needs
Bulimia nervosa
a disorder by binge eating followed by purging
Anorexia nervosa
a disorder by an intense fear of being fat
Metabolism
the rate at which energy is used
