Chapter 8 Flashcards
Aging
heat treatment that precipitates a second phase from a supersaturated solid solution
What is Anneal
A heat treatment process used to lower defect concentration in metals and glasses that result in softer, less brittle materials.
What is Bainite
is a two-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and cementite. Bainite forms when an austenitic steel is quenched to a temperature below the pearlite region but above the martensite start (Ms) temperature.
What is a Critical nuclues
a nucleus of the size such that either growth or dissolution will decrease its free energy.
What is Kinetics
the study of the rate of reactions and the factors that affect them, including the influence of time on phase transformations.
Supersaturation
The excess of solute in a given phase due to rapid quenching below the solvus temperature.
What is pearlite
A two phase microstructure of alternate ferrite and cementite lamellae occurring in some steels. Pearlite forms by the decomposition of austinite.
