What is gender?
Is a social role governed by how a culture defines masculinity and femininity.
What are gender roles?
They are clusters of traits a culture defines a mat as masculine or feminine. It can change over time from one culture to another.
What are social controls?
Penalties, such as ridicule, that enforce conformity to gender roles. Data shows that men and women traditionally conform to traditional gender roles in Canada.
Explain psychological barriers to gender equality.
They are experienced by boys who may never even aspire to be coming nurses or staying home with their children.
What are gender Spears?
They refer to areas of work, school and play dominated by either men or women.
What are some examples of gender spears?
They are mining engineering and team sports for men and nursing education and noncompetitive sports for women. Research indicates with respect to gender and to work, education and leisure.
What do structural functionalists believe?
Believe gender spheres are result of biological factors and help society function smoothly
What do conflict theorists believe ?
They believe gender spheres result from one sex deliberately dominating the other in order to serve their own interests.
What is a wage gap ?
It exist between men and women in every occupation in Canada.
What are men like in the domestic sphere?
They rarely get sole custody of their children and divorce
What is mediocracy?
It is when men and women freely choose their path in life and are rewarded based on how skilled, talented,and hard working they are,
Examples of systematic barriers to gender equality.
Laws preventing women from taking combat roles in military, laws preventing women from owning property or voting.
What is sexual politics and what does it refer to
It is a woman’s subtle use of sex as bargaining chip to get what the want in a relationship
How do you promote social equality?
Educating people about their choices, employment equity laws, removing discriminatory laws, proportional representation and removing discriminatory hiring practices
What is the percentage of women has been raped or was attempted in the United States ?
18.3%, 12.3% were younger than the age of 12 when they were first raped
