Chapter 8 Flashcards
Negative reinforcement
Increasing a behavior by taking away an aversive stimulus
Positive reinforcement
Increasing behavior with a positive stimulus
Primary reinforcers
One that satisfies a biological need
Conditioned (secondary) reinforcers
One that has been paired with a primary reinforcer and has acquired value and reinforcement
Positive punishment
Adding something unpleasant that decreases the likelihood the behavior will happen again
Negative punishment
Withdraw a desirable stimulus to decreases the likelihood the behavior will be repeated
Continuous reinforcement
Every time the desired behavior occurs, it is reinforced
Fixed ratio schedules
Specific number of correct responses is required before reinforcements occur
Variable ratio schedules
Unpredictable, number
Fixed interval
Predicted, time
Variable interval
Unpredictable, time
Punishment
When an unpleasant consequence decreases the likelihood the behavior will be repeated
Cognitive map
Making out where things are
Intrinsic motivation
Doing it for you
Extrinsic motivation
Doing it for a good grade
Modeling
The process of observing and imitating a specific behavior
Albert bandura
Bobo doll
Acquisition
Initial learning of the stimulus
Discrimination
Distinguish between conditioned and irrelevant
Shaping
Reinforced desired behavior (shape them how u want them)
B F Skinner
Operant chamber, rats, influential and controversial
Law of effect
Thorndike, favorable consequences
Conditioned response (CR)
Salivary reflex, learning between tone and food
Unconditioned stimulus (US)
Food that triggers salivary reflex
Unconditional response (UR)
Food into mouth automatically triggers salivary reflexes
Behaviorism
More mental
John Garcia
Taste aversion, PHD
Extinction
When it no longer signals an unconditional response
Operant conditioning
Behavior is strengthened if followed by a reinforcer or diminished if followed by a punisher
Generalization
Respond similar to conditioned stimulus
Spontaneous recovery
Suppressing not eliminating
Conditional stimulus (CS)
A learned response
Taste aversion
Bad experience less likely to eat again
Responding behavior
Occurs as an automatic response to some stimuli
Classical conditioning
Ivan pavlov, dog experiment
Thorndike
Law of effect
Operant behavior
Environment, consequences
Learning
Relatively permanent response, change in an organisms behavior
Associative learning
Linking 2 events
