“just the facts”: jargony - pt’s comprehension is obscured - not authentically communicative
“there’s always hope”: overly optimistic falsification
you can’t tell a pt everything: clinician must disclose what’s meaningful/useful/important
omission: a form of lying!
evasion: language of indirection - can become avoidance and self-deception
