“there’s always hope”: overly optimistic falsification
you can’t tell a pt everything: clinician must disclose what’s meaningful/useful/important
omission: a form of lying!
evasion: language of indirection - can become avoidance and self-deception
communication elements for “ideal clinician-patient relationship”
choice, competence, continuity, compassion, lack of conflict of interest, communication
listen/understand - pt values!
= less misinterpretation, quicker response/clarification
ethical grounds to disclose or not to disclose
principle of respect for pt’s AUTONOMY and trust!
- communication of knowledge is necessary for pts to participate in decision-making
