Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is the methods used for determining pressure loss and PDP by a driver operator during emergency operations?
Flowmeters
*Hydraulic calculators
* Pump charts
* Condensed Q method
* GPM flowing
(pg 281)
What are the two types of flow meters?
Paddlewheel, spring probe (pg 282)
What are examples of Flowmeter Application?
Diagnosing Waterflow Problems, Relay Pumping, (pg283)
what are the two types of hydraulic calculators?
Electronic and manual calculator
How do you use a pump chart?
the driver/operator must locate the nozzle or the
layout in question on the chart, account for the number of feet (meters) in the layout, then plot where each column intersects to find the required pump discharge pressure.
What is the Condensed Q formula?
FL = Q2
Where:
FL = Friction Loss in pounds per square inch (psi) for 100 feet of 3-inch hose
Q = Flow rate in hundreds of gallons per minute (gpm/100)
Example: FL = Q2
Q = gpm/100 = 200/100 = 2
FL = 2^2 = 4 psi per 100 feet of 3 inch hose
What are things to be aware of while using the condensed Q formula?
Although sufficient for many fireground calculations, the friction loss results will be 20 percent greater than when using the
FL= CQ2L formula.
