what is Racialization?
is a social process in which groups are judged as different in terms of their:
– Intellect, Morality, Values, (essential) worth
what is Racialization based on?
differences in physical appearance or cultural heritage
what is Visible Minority?
people, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.
what is the Master Narrative?
is the story a nation tells about itself to celebrate its past and present.
-Refined in schoolbooks, museums and pop culture.
-usually doesn’t include unpleasant events.
ex, Canada and residential schools.
the Indian act 1985?
Until 1985, the Indian Act only recognized men as “registered Indian”;
women’s status was gained from the man to who they were married and children got it from their father.
Bill C31
Bill C-31 passed enabling people who had lost their Indian status through marriage to apply to be reinstated.
Nova Scotia and the Blacks
Black communities have existed in Nova Scotia since 1779
–Offered freedom to slaves who left their American masters to fight for the British in the American Revolution
when did Segregation in Nova Scotia end

-The third-largest visible minority population in the country are Blacks
Asian Canadians?
-South Asians and Chinese Canadians make up the two largest visible-minority populations in the country.
-They were driven from China by poverty and were drawn to Canada by opportunities to work.
What was the Head Tax?
in 1885, the government imposed a $50 head tax on any Chinese migrant entering the country. By 1900 the head tax was $100 and $500 by 1903.
The 1912, Act to Prevent the Employment of Female Labour in Certain Capacities.
Chinese men were not allowed to employ or house any white women.
what is Race?
Race is something you are born into. It is based on how you look to others.
What is Ethnicity?
the fact of belonging to a population group or subgroup made up of people who share a common cultural background .

Most people identify with just one race but may have several ethnicities.
– Ethnicity is something you can opt into or out of
what is Essentialism?
every ethnic group is defined by a list of traits carried down from the past to the present with little or no change.
-culture does not change without the influence of outside forces.
-ex divisions between genders
what is Colonialism?
the economic and political exploitation of less developed societies of culturally different peoples
– weaker in military power and economic power?
what is Postcolonialism?
analyzes the destructive impact colonialism has on both the colonized and the colonizer.
what is Epiphenomenal theory?
any ethnic conflict is just a by-product of the struggle between economic classes
what is Instrumentalism?
focuses on emerging ethnicity rather than on long- established ethnic characteristics
what is Intersectionality?
how different social factors combined to shape the experience of a minoritized group.
-first developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw
what are ethnic entrepreneurs?
Elite members who mobilize ethnicity
-ex Hitler’s construction of and manipulation of the German “Aryan race”
what is Social constructivism?
is the view that ethnicity is artificial, constructed by individuals to serve some agenda.
Racialization?
Racialization: construction of certain groups of people as different and biologically superior or inferior
Prejudice?
Prejudice: pre-judgment of others based on their group membership.
Discrimination?
Discrimination: differential treatment rewarded or punished of individuals based on their group membership.
Power?
Power: when advantages are regularly handed to one or more groups over others.
Racial bigotry?
open, conscious expression of racist
views by an individual.
Systemic or Institutional racism?
racist practices, rules, and laws have become institutionalized.
- Ex the Indian act 1876
Polite, smiling, or friendly racism?
racism is hidden behind smiles or words that seem friendly
– E.g., micro-aggressions, which are casual remarks, gestures or misguided compliments that reflect racial prejudice
Racism is the product of four linked elements?
racialization, prejudice, discrimination, and power
