Affordable Care Act/ American Health Care Act
ACA: signed in 2010, helps U.S. states promote and support community living people with special needs
AHCA: delivered private markets over bureaucratic edicts and supported a more gradual reduction in the future growth of medicaid
Americans with Disabilities Act
protect persons with challenges from discrimination based on stigma
Categorical vs. Functional Disabilities
Categorical: sensory impairment or mental illness and have developmental delays
Functional: physical impairment and often have assistive devices or technology
Deinsitutionalization
removal of people with physical and mental challenges from institutions and their better integration into the community
genetic Counseling
provides information and support to people who have or may be at risk for genetic disorders
Independent-Living Centers
community agencies who use peer counseling and advocacy to help others live on their own.
Public Accommodations
access to buildings, medical equipment, signage, wide doorways, bathroom facilities, and parking area - uneven access to these facilitate an uncaring environment
Rehabilitative Services
providing resources and care to help disabled live independently with their diability
Social Stigma
“stain” on the way a person is perceived that leads them to be shunned by others
Special Needs
person with physical, cognitive, or developmental challenges
