Chapter 8 Flashcards
The Pythagorean Theorem
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
What is a pythagorean triple?
a set of nonzero whole numbers that satisfy the pythagorean theorem
examples of pythagorean triples
3,4,5
5,12,13
8,15,17
7,24,25
2 rules for the Pythagorean Theorem
1) right triangles ONLY
2) hypotenuse MUST be “c”
Theorems 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4 (right, obtuse, acute)
8-2 : If a^2 + b^2 = c^2, then the triangle is right
8-3 : If a^2 + b^2 < c^2, then the triangle is obtuse
8-4 : If a^2 + b^2 > c^2, then the triangle is acute
What does SOH - CAH - TOA mean?
SOH - CAH - TOA is an acronym to help you remember the functions and how to find different things in trigonometry.
What does SOH stand for?
Sin = opposite / hypotenuse
What does CAH stand for?
Cos = adjacent / hypotenuse
What does TOA stand for?
Tan = opposite / adjacent
What is Sin, Cos, and Tan?
Functions on a calculator that help you find different things.
Sin - Sine
Cos - Cosine
Tan - Tangent
If using angles A and B, what is the correlation between Sin A and Cos B / Sin B and Cos A?
They are reciprocals!
ex: 3/4 and 4/3
Can Trigonometry be used to find a missing angle? How do you do it if you can?
Yes! You can use the inverse of the sin, cos, or tan (sin -1, cos -1, or tan -1) and put in the equation that way! Remember, NEVER divide by trig words (sin, cos, tan)
What is special about angles of elevation and depression?
They are congruent! So if told to find the angle of depression, you can also find the angle of elevation because they are the same!
What is the formula for area of a triangle?
Area = 1/2 (a) (b) sinc
it is also known as the SAS for the area of a triangle
What is a regular polygon?
Polygon with congruent sides and angles
