Chapter 7.1 Biology Flashcards
What did Robert Hooke do?
First to name a cell a cell. (named after where the monks stayed in monasteries.)
What did Anton van Leeuwenhoek do?
Saw bacteria in pond water. (first to see living cells). He called them animalcules.
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life
Cell theory:
- All living things made of cells
- Cells are basic units of structure and function in living things
- new cells produced from existing cells
What did Schleiden do?
Said all plants are made of cells
What did Schwann do?
Animals made of cells
What did Virchow do?
new cells made from existing cells
Compound light microscope:
light passes through specimen and 2 lenses to form image
electron microscope:
uses beams of electrons that are focused by magnetic fields
transmission electron microscope:
an ultrathin slice is observed to look at the inside of cells
scanning electron microscope:
produces a 3d image by scanning the surface of the cell.
Light microscope benefits
Portable, views living things
Light microscope drawbacks
low res and low magnification
transmission electron microscope benefits:
high mag/ 2D high res
transmission electron microscope drawbacks:
can’t view living things, needs ultrathin slice
