Chapter 7- The Breathing System Flashcards
Breathing out
Exhaling
What happens during breathing?
1) We breathe oxygen into our lungs.
2) The oxygen then passes from our lungs into the bloodstream.
3) The blood carries the oxygen to the cells where it is used in respiration.
4) Carbon dioxide and water are waste products of respiration.
5) They pass from the cells into the bloodstream and are carried back to the lungs.
Larynx
Responsible for making sounds.
Rings of cartilage
Keeps the air tubes open.
Lungs
The breathing organ
Intercostal muscles
Cause the rib cage to move up and down during breathing.
Diaphragm
A sheet of muscle which moves up and down during breathing causing air to move in and out of the lungs.
Trachea
Allows air to move in and out of our lungs.
Bronchus
Tube which carries air from the trachea to the lungs.
Bronchioles
Thin tubes which carry air within the lungs.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs covered by a network of narrow blood cells. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the alveoli.
When does gaseous exchange occur?
Occurs when oxygen from the air is swapped with carbon dioxide from the body.
Dangers of smoking
- Tar
- Harmful chemicals
- Carbon monoxide
- Dangerous during pregnancy
- Causes lung cancer
