Depression
A period when economic activity slows and unemployment increases. After the revolutionary war the US went through a depression.
Republic
A government in which citizens rule through elected representatives
Ordinance
A law that set up a process to survey the lands North from the Ohio river. It divided the area into townships 6 miles long and 6 miles wide.
Northwest Ordinance
It was the first attempt to stop the spread of slavery, it guaranteed freedom of religion and trial by jury. Both ordinances were allowing people to stay in the west, buy land and apply statehood.
Shays Rebellion
An act when farmers had troubles where they were unable to sell their goods or pay their taxes and debts. This led to state officials seizing the farmers’ land and throwing them in jail. This angered farmers which made a violent rebellion.
The Virginia Plan
Proposed a strong central government made up of 3 branches, a two house Legislative, a chief Executive, and a court system. Each part of the plan had their own jobs and powers.
The New Jersey Plan
This plan consisted of a single house legislative, an executive branch made up of one person, each state having one vote, and smaller states had equality under the Articles. They were looking to amend the AOC.

This means each branch of government has ways to check, or limit, the power of the other branches. So one branch doesn’t have too much power.

People who supported the new constitution such as James Madison, Hamilton, and George Washington

t elects the president and the vice president which is voted by the people.
Enlightenment
A movement in the 1700 that promoted knowledge, reason, and science. It inspired us to transition from the AOC to the Constitution.

Was from Connecticut and suggested what later became the great compromise.

What was one major weakness of the confederation?
The financial issues such as debt and currency. The confederation had to ask states for things like troops and money but the states were not required to do so.
What were some of the confederation’s accomplishments?
Negotiating a peace treaty with Britain, expanding trade relations, settling/governing the country’s western lands.
What did the states adopt that limited the power of the governor?
