Chapter 7 - Statistics Flashcards
Box and Whisker Plot
A diagram that summarizes data using the median, the upper and lowers quartiles, and the extreme values (minimum and maximum). Box and whisker plots are also known as box plots. It is constructed from the five-number summary of the data: Minimum, Q1 (lower quartile), Q2 (median), Q3 (upper quartile), Maximum.
Dot Plot
A method of visually displaying a distribution of data values where each value is shown as a dot above a number line. (A dot plot is a type of line plot that uses dots instead of “x’s” to show the frequency of values.)
Frequency
The number of times an item, number, or event occurs in a set of data.
Histogram
A way of displaying numeric data using horizontal or vertical bars so that the height or length of the bars indicates frequency.
Inter-Quartile Range (IQR)
The difference between the first and third quartiles. (Note that the first quartile and third quartiles are sometimes called upper and lower quartiles.)
Maximum Value
The largest value in a set of data.
Mean Absolute Deviation
The average distance of each data value from the mean. The MAD is a gauge of “on average” how different the data values are from the mean value.
Mean
The “average” or “fair share” value for the data. The mean is also the balance point of the corresponding data distribution.
Arithmetic Mean= x= x1+x2+x3+x4…….xn
_______________
n
Measures of Center
The mean and the median are both ways to measure the center for a set of data.
Measures of Variation (Spread)
The range and the Mean Absolute Deviation are both common ways to measure the spread for a set of data.
Median
The value for which half the numbers are larger and half are smaller. If there are two middle numbers, the median is the arithmetic mean of the two middle numbers. Note: The median is a good choice to represent the center of a distribution when the distribution is skewed or outliers are present.
Minimum value
The smallest value in a set of data.
Mode
The number that occurs the most often in a list. There can be more than one mode, or no mode.
Outlier
A value that is very far away from most of the values in a data set.
Population
A group about which information is desired.
Quartile
When data in a set are arranged in order, quartiles are the numbers that split the data into quarters (or fourths).
Range
A measure of spread for a set of data. To find the range, subtract the smallest value from the largest value in a set of data.

Statistical
Write a statistical question that would help you gather data about the number of miles students at your school walk each week.
How many miles do the students on the Cool Cats’ team walk each week?
Coach Peavy is interested in learning about the amount of time players on the team spend practicing each week during the off season. What is a statistical question he can ask the players that will help him collect this data?
How many days a week do the baseball team members at BMS spend practicing during the off season?

Lars has a score of 89 for each of his first 3 science quizzes. The score on his fourth quiz is 92. What score does he need on his fifth quiz to have an average of 90?
91
The prom committee kept count of how many tickets it sold each day during lunch:
12, 32, 36, 41, 22, 47, 51, 33, 37, 49

For the next two data sets, find the Mean Absolute Deviation
a. Data Set 4: 5, 10, 34, 22, 9, 23, 20, 4, 16, 10
b. Data Set 5: 3, 10, 20, 22, 45, 1, 35, 33, 23, 10
a. 7.7
b. 11.4
The students in Mr. Harp’s science class took a benchmark last week. The following were the grades on the test:
89, 94, 90, 92, 88, 99, 23, 97, 94, 17
Find the mean, median, mode, range, and mean absolute deviation for the set of data.

Which measure of central tendency best represents the classes grades and why?
Median b/c high MAD which means there is an outlier(s) in the data. The mean is not reliable.
