Chapter 7 Solutions Flashcards
What is suspension?
A mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas
What is colloid?
Mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between solutions and suspensions in liquids, solids, and gas
What is emulsion?
Any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids, in which one liquid is dispersed in the other.
What is a solution?
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances dispersed throughout a single phase.
What is a solute?
In a solution, the substance dissolves in the solvent
What is a solvent?
I’m a solution, the substance the solute dissolves
What is alloy?
A solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
Composed of dissimilar components ( taco salad)
What is decanting?
The process of pouring a lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid
What is immiscible?
A mixture does not mix
What is Tyndall effect?
The scattering of light
What is polar compound?
A molecule that has been an uneven distribution of electrons
What is hydrogen bonding?
The intermolecular force occurring when a hydrogen that is bonded highly electro negative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule.
What in a nonpolar compound?
A compound whose electrons whose electrons are equally distributed among its atoms.
What is solubility?
The maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given quality of solvent at a given temperature.
