Chapter 7 Section 4 Flashcards
Dynamic Equilibrium
Condition of continuous, random movement of particles but no overall change in concentration of materials
Diffusion
Movement of particles From an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Facilitated diffusion
Uses transport proteins to move other ions and small molecules across the plasma membrane
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic solution
When a cell is in a solution that has the same concentration of water and solutes as it cytoplasm the cell is in isotonic solution
Hypotonic solution
When a cell is in a solution that has a lower concentration of solute
Hypertonic solution
The concentration of the solute outside of the cell is higher than inside
Active transport
Energy requiring process by which substances move across the plasma membrane against a concentration gradient
Endocytosis
Energy requiring process by which large substances from the outside environment can enter a cell
Exocytosis
Energy requiring process by which a cell expels waste and secretes substances at the plasma membrane
