Fossil fuels
The remains of dead plants or animals compressed under the earth.
Open- cut mining
A method of mining mineral ores that are close to the surface. A large hole is put in the ground to expose the rocks , which are broken using explosives.
Mineral ore
A substance that contains minerals of values, that can be obtained by mining.
Black coal
A harder, drier form of coal, formed from peat compressed over millions of years
Brown coal
A form of coal formed from peat compressed over millions of years.
Gangue
Leftover waste, rock and mineral material. It is produced from the processes that extract mineral ore.
Deposition
Is when this moving sediment is placed somewhere.
Desalination
Is the process of separating salt from sea water to make it drinkable.
Weathering
Is the process of breaking down things into smaller pieces.
Erosion
Is when sediment is carried away by water, wind or ice over time.
Biomass
Material produced by living organisms.
Mining
The process of removing mineral ore from the ground.
Deforestation
The removal of trees from land.
