Chapter 7- Quantum Mechanical Model of the Atom Flashcards
Where do electrons sit around the nuclei?
In electron clouds called orbitals
what did heisenberg say?
he said it is impossible to know both the velocity and the position of a particle at the same time we can know one or the other but once we become sure of one the other becomes even harder to define because it has changed because of the collision with the photon.
How many principle levels are there?
7 represented by the letter n
what are the sublevels?
s,p,d and f
Why is the proton nuclei not also a cloud of orbitals like electrons?
The nucleus has a much larger mass therefore the particules are held together more tightly. the nucleus is about 100 times smaller than the electron cloud.
Explain how colour is seen?
as light hits an object all colours are absorbed except the colour that is visible to the eye (green chair reflects only green while absorbing all other colours in the spectrum)
Explain the pauli exclusion principle?
no two atoms within the same orbital can possess the same spin
