Chapter 7 pre-algebra glossary Flashcards
function
special relation in which each member of the domain is paired with exactly one member in the range.
(-2,-1), (-4,3), (-5,4), (-9,7)
not an example:
(-2,1), (-2,3),(5,4) (6,7)
linear equation
an equation in which the variables appear in separate terms and neither variable contains an exponent other than 1.
ex. y = 1.50x
linear relationship
relationships that have straight-line graphs
p. 365
rate of change
a rate that describes how one quantity changes in relation to another quantity
slope
the steepness of a line; ratio of the rise or the vertical change, to the run, or the horizontal change
vertical change (height) (rise) \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ horizontal change (length) (run)
slope intercept form
a linear equation in the form of y=mx+b, where m is slope and b is the y intercept
vertical line test
way to determine whether a relation is a function
if any vertical line drawn on the graph f a relation passes through no more than one point on the graph for each value of x in the domain, then the relation is a function.
y-intercept
y-coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the y-axis
relation
set of ordered pairs
domain
set of all x-coordinates from each pair
range
set of y-coordinates
