Helplines and Advice
Provide emergency assistance or expert advice to policyholders. This is usually in the form of a 24 hour helpline or an app.
The benefits of providing this service, relating mainly to control the potential claim.
• Helpline will help the policyholder get repairs carried out quickly
• Can control the standard of work completed by the repairer
• Control the costs involved in the repair
Authorised Repairers
Usually applied in private motor insurance. They have arrangements with repairers who apply a price reduction on parts and labour due to the guaranteed work.
Benefits of the approved repairer scheme:
• Collection and delivery of the vehicle
• No requirement to obtain repair estimates
• Provision of a loan car while repairs are carried out
Authorised Suppliers
Insurers use authorised suppliers when they exercise their right to replace property, particularly household goods under a household contents policy.
The benefits are:
• Insured obtains the benefit of the guarantees provided by the retailer
• Insurers benefit from preferential rates
• No need for any negotiation over price which may be necessary in a cash settlement
Risk Control and Advice
Insurers and intermediaries are very willing to provide advice on risk control as it is in everybody’s interest to reduce the number and cost of claims.
For personal insurances, many insurers provide advice on the adequacy of locks and other security measures. They will encourage the use of, e.g. smoke detectors, by discounting premiums.
Risk Control and Advice Association of British Insurers
ABI produces a range of consumer information covering a number of insurance issues. Including a beginners’ guide to insurance, basic principles, an explanation of how insurance works and individual fact sheets.
Risk Control and Advice Fire Protection Association
FPA provides advice and guidance in specialist areas.
The range is extensive and includes a business fire risk assessment guide.
Charge for their publications.
Risk Control and Advice Environment Agency
EA provides guidance on flood risk and protection, issuing warnings of potential flooding via apps, texts and phone calls.
