Q

How do domains work?

A

Magnetic materials are made up of multiple domains. All the atoms in each domain are lined up but for the material to be magnetic the domains need to line up with each other

Q

What is a permanent magnet?

A

Material that keeps its magnetic properties even when not close to other magnets.

  • produces own magnetic field
  • can’t turn on/off

Q

What is a temporary/induced magnet?

A

Only becomes a magnet when placed in a magnetic field

  • loses magnetism when magnet is removed
  • can only attract

Q

What is an electromagnet?

A
A magnet created using electricity
Properties:
-can be switched on and off
-poles can be reversed by changing direction of current
-can be made weaker/stronger
