Chapter 7 - Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnet?
A material that can create magnet effects by itself
What is magnetism?
Force of attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles
How do domains work?
Magnetic materials are made up of multiple domains. All the atoms in each domain are lined up but for the material to be magnetic the domains need to line up with each other
What are the properties of magnetic fields?
- Go from north to south
- Lines don’t cross
- Lines are closer near the poles
What is a permanent magnet?
Material that keeps its magnetic properties even when not close to other magnets.
- produces own magnetic field
- can’t turn on/off
What is a temporary/induced magnet?
Only becomes a magnet when placed in a magnetic field
- loses magnetism when magnet is removed
- can only attract
What is an electromagnet?
A magnet created using electricity Properties: -can be switched on and off -poles can be reversed by changing direction of current -can be made weaker/stronger
What is solenoid?
Coil of live wire
What is core?
An object that is inserted into solenoid creating an electromagnet
What are the three magnetic metals?
- Iron
- Cobalt
- Nickel
What is a uniform field?
Field lines that travel in s straight line from north to south
What is a circular field?
Field lines that travel in concentric circles around a current-carrying wire
What happens when you combine a uniform field and circular field?
A resultant field is formed because field lines can’t cross
What is each finger in Fleming’s Left Hand Rule?
thuMb = Motion/force
First Finger = magnetic Field
seCond finger = Current
What unit is used to measure strength of magnetic field?
Tesla - T
