Chapter 7 - Heat Inside Earth Flashcards
Fill in the blank.
The ________ located under the oceanic crust.
Mantle
What are waves that…
- move forward and backward
- are faster than Secondary waves
Primary Waves or P - Waves
What two layers are located in the lithosphere?
Crust and Upper Mantle
Define the term “core”
The core is the center of Earth and is split into two sections; the inner core and outer core.
True or False?
S - Waves are faster than P - Waves.
False. S - Waves travel 3 kilometers per second, while P - Waves travel 5 kilometers per second.
What type of scientist studies, detects, and interprets seismic waves?
A seismologist.
What can possibly form vibrations called seismic waves?
Earthquakes.
Human - Made Blasts
Determine the word for this definition:
A movement that begins in one location and sets things in motion farther away.
Disturbance.
I hold all humans, roads, buildings, etc. for Earth. I have two main portions; the oceanic and continental _______. I am the thinnest out of all of Earth’s layers. What am I?
Crust.
What direction does an S - Wave move in?
S - Waves move from side to side.
True or False?
The mantle is 2,899 km thick.
False. The mantle is 2,900 kilometers thick.
Kendra wrote down facts about the outer core. She wrote:
Composition: Iron & Nickel
Thickness: 5,100 km
State of Matter: Solid
Is she correct or incorrect? Why? In which answers did she write incorrectly?
Kendra is incorrect because the thickness is not the depth. Instead of putting the thickness, she placed the depth of the outer core, which is 5,100 km. It should’ve been 2,200 km thick. The state of matter she put was also incorrect because the iron in the outer core is heated up so much, that it is melted into a liquid.
The outer core creates a process that is very significant to human life. What is the important process?
The process is the how the magnetic field is created and protects the planet from harmful solar radiation. If the outer core cooled and stopped moving, our lives would all e in great danger.
What is the hottest layer of Earth?
The inner core.
True or False?
S - Waves aren’t able to pass through liquid.
True.
