Chapter 7 Electron Config Flashcards
Pseudo-noble gas configuration
-Attained when a metal empties its highest energy level
-Ions attain stability from empty ns and np sub levels and a filled (n-1)d sublevel
Inert pair configuration
-Metal loses only the np electrons
-Ions attain stability of a filled ns and (n-1)d sublevels
Paramagnetism
Species with one or more unpaired electron
-is attracted by a magnetic field
Diamagnetism
Species with all electrons paired
-not attracted (and is slightly repelled) by magnetic field
Isoelectric series
Series of ions that have the same electron configuration
Ionization Energy
The energy required for the complete removal of 1mol of electrons from 1mol of gaseous atoms or ions
Electron Affinity
The energy change that occurs when 1mol of electrons is added to 1mol of gaseous atoms or ions
