Deviance
violation of established contextual, culture, or social norms
Social Control
regulation and enforcement of norms (manager)
Social Order
goal of social control, an arrangement of practices and behaviors which society bases daily life (employee handbook)
Strain Theory
access to socially acceptable goals plays a part in determining whether person conforms or deviates
Social Disorganization Theory
crime is most likely to occur in communities with weak social ties and absence of social control
Labeling Theory
ascribing of a deviant behavior to another person by members of society, deviance is determined by reactions of others to behaviors
Primary Deviance
violation of norms that does not result in any long-term effects (speeding)
Secondary Deviance
person’s self-concept and behavior change after his actions label him as deviant (troublemaker) can bestow master status
Differential Association Theory
individuals learn deviant behavior from those close to them (friends have sex, see it as okay)
Crime
behavior that violates official law and is punishable through formal sanctions
Legal Codes
maintain formal control through laws
