What are combination birth control pills (oral contraceptives) and how do they work to prevent pregnancy?
it is a pill taken everyday for 21 days; where it prevents ovulation
What hormones are involved in this process?
Estrogen and progestin

99.7 is perfect vs 92 is typical
What are side-effects of taking oral contraceptives?
weight gain, water retention, depression and irritability in some extremes could lead to blood clots
How dangerous is the pill when it comes to blood clots?
It could create blood clots in your legs then eventually move to the lungs causing a stroke
What are advantages and disadvantages of taking oral contraceptives?
they are almost 100% effective, does not interfere with sex, reduces menstrual flow; where disadvantages are the pill makes you infertile EVERYDAY of the month which is not good for the body
What other kinds of pills are now being offered for birth control and how do they work (i.e., Triphasic and progestin-only pills)?
Triphasic is similar to the birth control pill but it is a higher dosage of estrogen to create natural hormones; Progestin only pills are created to avoid side affects
How does a woman become pregnant after getting off of it (i.e., what is the reversibility of oral contraceptives)?
Stop taking it at the end of the last cycle
What is “the patch”? How does a woman use it?
Two layered patch with an adhesive size that has hormones that should be replaced every 7 week
What is a “vaginal ring”? How does a woman use it?
A ring inserted into the vagina that should be replaced after 21 days
What is Depo-Provera? How does a woman use it?
A injection form of birth control which she should get the shot ever 3 months; it inhibits ovulation
What are the effectiveness, side effects, advantages, disadvantages and reversibility of Depo-Provera?
It is 98% effective, with no side affects, advantages are no interference during sex, disadvantages is “spotting”
What is emergency contraception? How does it work?
“the morning after pill” usually taken within 24 hours no later than 5 days called Plan B
