Chapter 7 - Coating Fundamentals Flashcards
Two broad classifications of a coating are?i
Organic or inorganic.
Organic made of materials that were alive at one time.
Inorganic never living.
Convertible and non-convertible
Thermosetting and thermoplastic
Describe the three methods by which a coating provides corrosion control
Barrier coatings, inhibitive coatings and sacrificial cathodic protection.
What are the three different ways a coating can adhere to the surface?
Chemical bond, polar adhesion and mechanical adhesion. A combination of all three
List three desirable properties of a coating.
Chemical resistance, water resistance, ease of application, adhesion to substrate, cohesive strength, flexibility and elongation, impact resistance, abrasion resistant, temperature resistant and dielectric strength.
What are The two primary components of a liquid applied coating?
Pigment and vehicle (resin or binder and solvent)
What does the vehicle consist of?
Resin/binder, solvent and liquid additives
