Human Rights
Inalienable, fundamental rights, all individuals have regardless of background. (Origin: Greek & Roman Stoics)
Civil Rights
Personal liberties, incl. freedom of speech, religion, private property, equal treatment under law
Political Rights
Right to vote, political protest, assembly
Social Rights
Security from violence, descent standard of living, health care, education
UN Charter
Signed in 1945 in San Francisco, beginning of United Nations; promotes peace and security
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
1948: Document stating: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” - Eleanor Roosevelt
Global Regime
Human Rights -> Civil -> Economic & Social -> No Torture
Natural Law
They are what we have in the absence of community: inspired the D.O.I & U.N.
Direct Intervention
U.N. using influence in a gov’t to prevent/stop injustice by their standards.
Difficulty of Intervention
Understaffing of gov’t, poor intel management
International Criminal Court (ICC)
Complements national courts; acts on genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes ¤crimes of aggression.
Responsibility to Protect (R2P)
Prevention and end to genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing
Why no R2P in Myanmar?
Countries did not all vote “Yes” to intervene. China held back votes.
When can the U.N. Intervene
Right Intention -> Last Resort -> Proportional Means -> Success Factor
