Chapter 7 7:2 Flashcards
Body planes
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections
Three main body planes
Transverse plane
Midsagittal plane
Frontal plane
Transverse plane
Horizontal plane divides the body into top half and bottom half
Superior
Body parts above
Cranial
Body parts located near the head
Cranial
Body parts located near the head
Caudal
Body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column
( also known as the tail)
Midsagittal or Median plane
Divides body into right and left sides
Medial
Body parts close to the midline or plane
Lateral
Body parts away from the midline
Frontal or Coronal plane
Divides body into front and back sections
Ventral or Anterior
Body parts in front of the plane or in front of the body
Dorsal or Posterior
Body parts on the back of the body
Proximal
Body parts close to the point of reference
Distal
Body parts distant from the point of reference
Body cavities
Spaces within the body that contain vital organs
Two main body cavities
Dorsal or Posterior
Ventral or Anterior
Cranial cavity
Contains the brain
Dorsal Cavity
Is one long continuous cavity located on the back of the body
Spinal cavity
Contains the spinal cord
Ventral Cavities
- Larger than the dorsal cavity
- Separated into 2 distinct cavities by the dome- shaped muscle called
the diaphragm.
Diaphragm- important for respiration (breathing)
Abdominal Cavity or Pelvic Cavity
- Divided into upper and lower parts
- Upper abdominal cavity contains: • the stomach •small intestine •most of the large intestine •appendix •liver •gallbladder •pancreas •spleen
- Lower abdominal cavity contains
•urinary bladder
•reproductive organs
•last part of the large intestine
Thoracic Cavity
Located in the chest contains :
- The esophagus
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Lungs
- Heart
- Large blood vessels
Three small cavities are
Orbital Cavity
Nasal Cavity
Buccal Cavity
Orbital Cavity
For the eyes
Nasal Cavity
For the nose structure
Buccal Cavity or mouth
For the teeth and tongue
Abdominal Cavity
So large it’s divided into regions
