Functions Approach
Successful groups recognize both their task & socioemotional needs

Leadership involves behaviors that help a group overcome obstacles to goal achievement & communication skills are how leaders actually lead
Leadership competencies in virtual groups
- effective leaders are central to success of virtual groups
- have to thoughtfully manage virtual group meetings
- do not lose sight of the social dimension of virtual groups
- use different technologies in their group work
Source of Power - Reward
Giving followers tangible/intangible rewards of special attention, acknowledgement, compliments, etc.
Source of Power - Punishment
considered punishment when the rewards are withheld from followers
Source of Power - Legitimate
Comes from a title or role acknowledged by followers
Source of Power - Referent
based on attraction/identification w another person
Source of Power - Expert
comes from what other people think the person can accomplish
Designated Leader
A person elected or appointed to a leadership position
- gives stability to a group
- Groups w/ designated leaders have less problems
Emergent Leader
- Member starts out as an equal but emerges as a leader
Self-Monitoring when leading
Individuals’ ability to monitor social cues and adapt their actions
Democratic Leaders (leadership styles)
Encourage members to participate in decisions
Laissez-fiare leaders (leadership styles)
take almost no initiative for structuring a group “Whatever you do is fine with me”
Autocratic Leaders (Leadership styles)
tightly control their groups, making assignments, directing interaction, and giving orders
