Health Maintenance Organization
An organization that provides/arranges managed care for health insurance, self-funded health care benefit plans, individuals, and other entities in the United States
Uninsured Americans
Americans not covered by insurance
Medicare
A federal health insurance program, administered by the Social Security Administration, that provides health care for the aged
Medicaid
joint federal and state program that helps low-income individuals or families pay for the costs associated with long-term medical and custodial care, provided they qualify
National Health Insurance
health insurance that insures a national population for the costs of health care and usually is instituted as a program of healthcare reform enforced by law
Children’s Health Insurance Program
A program administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides matching funds to states for health insurance to families with children
Health Security Act
A 1993 healthcare reform package proposed by the administration of President Bill Clinton
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
A United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010 that will ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care
EPA
An agency of the United States federal government whose mission is to protect human and environmental health
National Environment Policy Act
A United States environmental law that established a U.S. national policy promoting the enhancement of the environment in 1970
Environmental Impact Statements
The positive and negative environmental effects of a proposed action, (also lists one or more alternative actions that may be chosen instead of the action described)
Clean Air Act 1970
Authorized the development of comprehensive federal and state regulations to limit emissions from both stationary (industrial) sources and mobile sources
Water Pollution Control Act 1972
Legislation with the intent to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters by preventing point and nonpoint pollution sources
Endangered Species Act 1973
Provides for the conservation of species that are endangered or threatened, and the conservation of the ecosystems on which they live
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
Gives EPA the authority to control hazardous waste from generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste
Superfund
A fund established to finance a long-term, expensive project
Global Warming
A term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and its oceans
Fossil Fuels
A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms

The energy released during nuclear fission or fusion, especially when used to generate electricity

Energy generated in ways that do not deplete natural resources or harm the environment

A government’s strategy in dealing with other nations
United Nations
An international organization formed in 1945 to increase political and economic cooperation among member countries
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (North Atlantic Alliance) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949
European Union
A politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe (operates through a system of supranational institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions)
