Chapter 7 Flashcards
Crude birth rate
The number of births per 1000 individuals per year
Demography
Study of human populations and population trends
Crude death rate
Number of deaths per thousand individuals per year
Total fertility rate
An estimate of the average number of children that each woman in a population will bear throughout her childbearing years
Replacement level fertility
The total fertility rate required to offset the average number of deaths in a population in order to maintain the current population size
Population momentum
Continued population growth that does not slow in response to growth reduction measures
Net migration rate
The difference between immigration and emigration in a given year per thousand people in a country
Four phases of demographic transition
Phase 1: slow population growth (high death and birth rate)
phase 2: rapid population growth (low death rates high birth rates)
phase 3: stable population growth (birth rate begins to fall)
phase 4: declining population growth (birth rate below death rate. Advanced economy)
Family-planning
The regulation of the number or spacing of offspring through the use of birth control
IPAT equation
Impact = population x affluence x technology
Urban area
An area that contains more than 385 people per square kilometer
GDP
The measure of the value of all products and services produced in a country in a year
Doubling time
Doubling time = 70 / growth rate
Global population growth rate
(CBR-CDR)/10
National population growth rate
(CBR + immigration) - (CDR + emigration) / 10
