Chapter 7 Flashcards
Combustible
Material that will ignite and burn, either as a flame or glow, and that undergoes this process in air at pressures and temperatures that might occur during a fire.
Fire Assembly
An assembly of a fire door, fire window, or fire damper, including all required anchorage, frames, sills, and hardware.
Fire Barrier
A fire-resistance-rated vertical or horizontal assembly of materials designed to restrict the spread of fire in which openings are protected.
Fire Partition
A fire-resistive component used to separate dwelling units in R-2 construction, guest rooms in R-1 construction, and tenant spaces in covered mall buildings; they are also used as corridor walls. Fire partitions generally are required to have a minimum 1-hour fire-protection-rated construction except in certain circumstances. They are similar to fire barriers, but the requirements for support are not strict.
Fire-Protection Rating
The period of time an opening assembly, such as a door or window, can confine a fire or maintain its integrity, or both, when tested in accordance with NFPA 252, ANSI/UL 10B, or ANSI/UL 10C for doors, and NFPA 257 for windows. An assembly that requires a fire-protection rating must withstand fire exposure and thermal shock as would an assembly that required a fire-resistance rating, but it need not withstand heat transmission as walls, columns, and floor do.
Fire-Rated Glazing
Glazing with either a fire-protecting rating or a fire-resistance rating.
Fire Resistance
The property of a material or assembly to withstand or resist the spread of fire or give protection from it.
Fire-Resistance Rating
The period of time a building component such as a wall, floor, roof, beam, or column can confine a fire or maintain its structural integrity, or both, when tested in accordance with ASTM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. This is different from a fire-protection rating, which involved protected open assemblies.
Fire-Resistance Construction
Same as fire resistance. The property of a material or assembly to withstand or resist the spread of fire or give protection from it.
Flame Spread
The propagation of flame over a surface.
Flame Resistance
The ability to withstand flame impingement or give protection from it. This applies to individual materials as well as combinations of components when tested in accordance to NFPA 701, Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films.
Flame-Spread Index
The numerical value assigned to a material tested in accordance with ASTM E84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials.
Flammable
Capable of burning with a flame and subject to easy ignition and rapid flaming combustion.
Noncombustible
Material that will not ignite and burn when subject to fire. The IBC classifies as a noncombustible only if it is tested in accordance with ASTM E136, Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a Vertical Tube Furnace at 750 degrees C, , or if it has a structural base of noncombustible material with a surfacing not more than 1/8 in thick that has a flame-spread index no greater than 50.
Trim
Includes picture molds, chair rails, baseboards, hand rails, door and window frames, and similar decorative or protective materials used in fixed applications.
