Electroencephalograph (EEG)
A device tht records the electrical activity of the brain
Conciousness
A state of awareness including a persons feelings sensations ideas and perception
Why do we sleep
We sleep because we want to restore our bodies. . Recovers from exhaustion and stress. To conserve energy. Sleep also is to be believe tht we get rid of useless information
Freud’s level of consciousness
Conscious (perception thoughts)
Preconscious (memories stored knowledge)
Unconsciousness (selfish needs immoral urges irrational wishes fears violent motives shameful experiences unacceptable desires)
Stage 1 of sleep
Starting to drift off. Low frequency amplitude, high frequency waves to high amplitude, low frequency wave a pattern tht indicates you have entered
Stage 2 sleep
Start to drift off into a deeper level of stage 3
Stage 3
Large amplitude delta waves begin to sweep your brain every second or so
Stage 5
Deepest sleep of all and it is difficult to waken a sleeper in this stage
REM sleep
A stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, a high level of brain activity. A deep relaxation of the muscles and dreaming
Circadian rhythm
The rhythm of activity and inactivity lasting approximately one day
Insomnia
The failure to get enough sleep at night in order to feel rested the nxt day
Sleep apnea
A sleep disorder in which a person has trouble breathing while asleep
Narcolepsy
A condition characterized by suddenly falling asleep or feeling very sleepy during the day
Nightmares
Unpleasant dreams
Night terrors
Sleep disruption that occur during stage 5 of sleep involving screaming panic or confusion
Sleep walking
Walking or carrying out behaviors while asleep
Hypnosis
A state of consciousness resulting from a narrowed focus of attention and characterized by heightened suggestibility
Posthypnotic suggestion
A suggestion made during hypothesis that influences the participants behavior afterward.
Biofeedback
The process of learning to control bodily states with the help of machines monitoring the states to be controlled
Meditation
The focusing of attention to clear one’s mind and produce relaxation
Psychoactive drug
Chemicals that affect the nervous system and result in alter consciousness
Marijuana
The dried leaves and flowers of Indian hemp (cannabis sativa) that produce an altered state of consciousness when smoked or ingested
Hallucinations
Perceptions that have no direct external cause
Hallucinogens
Drugs that often produce hallucinations
