Chapter 7 Flashcards
What is the Neuromuscular Junction ?
The place of contact of a Neuron with the muscle.
What is the function of Acetylcholinesterase ?
An enzyme that breaks down Acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft.
What is Curare ?
A toxin found in certain South American plants that creates muscle paralysis
(Found in Botox) !
What is the corticolspinal tract ?
A pathway down from the brain, it contains axons that travel down from the upper motor neurons of the primary motor cortex and connect to the lower motor neurons
Where is the cerebellum
That little brain attached to the hind brain
The cortical source of movement signals sent to the brain stem and spinal cord
The primary motor cortex
Premortor cortex is responsible for ?
Motor planning and awareness of motor intentions
Production of internally generated sequences of movement
Supplementary motor cortex
The Cerebellum is responsible for
Coordination, error correction, and learning of fine skilled movements
Initiation and inhibition of movement and reward based learning
Basal Ganglia
What does the Superior colliculus control ?
Control of eye movement
The pre motor cortex is __________ to the primary motor cortex
Rostral
The Basal ganglia and the cerebellum are two important sub cortical components of the motor system. The cerebellum is ___________ to the basal ganglia
Posterior and inferior
Expanding on the flexion reflex example of the dog, if the animal stepped on a sharp tack with the right hindlimb, what signals would be sent to the left hindlimb ?
Excitatory signal to the motor neurons for the extensor muscle, inhibitory signal to the motor neurons for the flexor muscle
What does the primary motor cortex map ?
It’s responsible for all motor movements in an organism
