stratum spinosum
second deepest and thickest layer, contains more keratin, keratin filaments cause the cells to flatten
stratum granulosum
there is 3-5 layers of granule/vessicle containing keratinocytes which means the smallest cells with neurons, cells are dying
epidermal water barrier
formed by the stratum granulosum and it water proofs skin, prevents dehydration, and cells above this layer die because they are cut off from nutrients
stratum lucidum
thin translucent zone, only in thick skin, no nuclei or organelles, cels filled with eleidin (clear protein)
