What are androgens?
Hormones produced by the testes, ovaries, and adrenal cortex
Major androgen is testosterone
What effects does testosterone have on sex characteristics in males?
Pubertal transformation and spermatogenesis
What effects does testosterone have on sex characteristics in females?
Clitoral growth and pubic hair
What are other systemic effects of testosterone?
Skeletal mm. growth, erythropoietin effects, (men have greater HCT than women)
What is the clinical use of testosterone?
Male hypogonadism, replacement tx, delayed puberty, anemia, replacement in menopausal women (controversial)
What are products/routes for Androgen replacement therapy in hypogonadal males? What class schedule are these medications?
Class III drugs

IM - Depo-Testosterone
Transdermal Patch/GelTopical - Androderm/Androgel/Axiron
Nasal Gel - Natesto
Implantable pellets - Testopel
Buccal system - Striant
Androgen (anabolic steriod) abuse significant risks?
HTN, suppression of release of LH and FSH, testicular shrinkage, sterility, gynecomastia,
acne, reduction in HDL, and increase in LDL
