chapter 6.3 - vascular plants with seeds Flashcards
taroot
roots specialized that uses the roots as ground storage (eg- carrot)
fibrous
prevents it from flowing away or falling over
epidermis
these cells provide a protective layer and absorb water and minerals
cortex
transports material through the root any may store food
endodermis
contains a layer of a waterproof substance that stops further movement of water into cells
pericycle
regulates the formation of lateral roots by rapidly dividing
xylem
the vascular tissue in plants that conducts water and dissolve nutrients upward from the root and helps to form the woodly element in the stem
phloem
the vascular tissue in plants that conducts sugars and other metabolic products downward
root cap
protects the root apical meristem from fiction of the soil particles
root apical meristem
where all cells are capable of repeated division and where most root comes from
zone of elongation
cells have are newly formed cells which lose the power of division, but the elongate rapidly
zone of maturation
cells differentiate and mature in this zone
pal
where most of the photosynthesis occurs
spongy mesophyll cells
allows oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water to diffuse in/out of the leaf
stomata
small openings on the bottom of a lead surrounded by two kidney-shaped guard cells that allow gas to enter and exit the leaf
