Chapter 6.3 and 6.4 Flashcards
Which telescopes can be built on the ground?
Radio and Visible Light telescopes
Which telescopes can be built in space?
1) Gamma Ray.
2) Ultra Violet.
3) X Ray
4) Most Infrared
What telescopes can be built on earth?
1) Visible Light
2) Microwave
3) Shortwave Radio
Atmospheric Windows
The spectrum of light he earth lets in or does not let in to the atmosphere.
Why is the resolution power of the arecibo radio telescope weak despite its large size?
Resolution power is equal to wavelength over diameter. The wavelengths of radio light is very long so despite the size of the dish it has the same resolving power as the human eye.
Interferometer
The use of multiple telescope spaced apart to create a more complete image.
Interferometric array.
Use of multiple radio telescopes in an array to observe light sources with better resolution that optical telescopes. VLA in New Mexico
What are some solution to observing infrared from earth?
Either telescopes can be built high above sea level such as the Mauna Key Observatory 4200 meters above sea level. Or telescopes can be mounted on planes such as SOFIA and observe light from high above the lower levels of the atmosphere. However even with such adaptations some infrared light must be observed from space.
HST
Observes Visible, Infrared, and UV light.
Lanksy
Basic Unit of Measurement for Flux Density
Flyby
When a spacecraft first approaches then flies by an object. Voyager 1 and 2
Orbiters
Do more reconnaissance work that fly by spacecraft. But there are more expensive and more difficult to make because they have to use limited fuel and make risky maneuvers to make it into orbit. Can be used to monitor the weaver, map the surface of a planet, composition of the atmosphere, rock types, etc.
Landers
Spacecraft which touch down and remain on the surface. Very expensive and as a result can only survey limited areas of the surface. Measure surface chemistry and physical properties of surface rocks and soils.
Atmospheric Probes
Descend to the atmosphere of planets and send back data on temperature, pressure, wind speed, and chemical composition.
Large Hadron Collider
Collide particles at high speeds to simulate and study th conditions of the early universe. Used to understand subatomic particles.
