Chapter 6 Vocabulary Flashcards
covalent
relating to or denoting chemical bonds formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms
covalent compound
when a molecule is formed from a covalent bond. these covalent bonds results from sharing valence electrons between two atoms
formula unit
the smallest combination of atoms or ions that correctly represents the ratio in which they are combined in a chemical compound
organic compound
a compound that is built of atoms of carbon
and other elements.
if there is no carbon present the compound is inorganic
binary compound
ionic or covalent compound that is made of atoms of two different elements
Ex: MgCl2
diatomic molecule
a molecule that is built of exactly two atoms
either of the same element or two different elements
monatomic ion
A single atom
that lost or gained
one or more electrons
as compared to the neutral atom
of the same element.
positively or negatively charged
polyatomic Ion
A group of atoms
of the same or different element
held together by covalent bonds
carrying non zero electric charge,
positive or negative.
not a compound per se but
can be part of an ionic compund when combined with an ion of opposite charge
ion
refers to the ratio between
protons and electrons in an atom or molecule,
or net electric charge
due to the loss or gain
of one or more electrons
acid
a covalent compund whose molecules have a special hydrogen atom
that can be detatched from the rest of the molecule as hydrogen ion ( H+ )
in an aqueous solution, water solvent.
The rest of the molecule becomes a negitively charged ion.
A pure acid may not conduct electricity,
but its aqueous solution (acid mixed with water) does conduct electricity.
The sour taste of acids is due to hydrogen ion.
