Keratinocyte
Cell that arises deep in the epidermis and produces the waterproofing protein keratin.
Papilloma
This is the viral cause for warts
Hypothalamus
The control center or integrator responsible for maintaining blood temperature.
Arrector pili
A smooth muscle that attaches to the hair follicle and serves to elevate the hair when the body is exposed to cold
Border
This is the “B” in the ABCD rule used to diagnose abnormal mole growth.
Hypothermia
This is the condition that results when the body cannot maintain its normal temperature in extremely cold environments.
Pyrogens
Chemical messengers that that elicit a response in the body which raises the body’s temperature set point, leading to a fever.
Albinism
Genetic disorder that results from the inability to convert tyrosine into melanin.
Diameter
The “D” in the ABCD growth rule used to diagnose abnormal mole growth.
Sudoriferous
A simple, tubular gland that produces sweat; a.k.a a sweat gland
Terminal
Type of hair found on the scalp, eyebrows, and pubic areas; a.k.a guard hair
Nines
This is a special “rule”used to estimate the body surface area affected by a burn.
Melanocyte
This is a cell that produces the pigment that gives the skin color.
Lanugo
This is the name for the fine, soft hair coat that you shed prior to birth.
Jaundice
This is a skin condition where, due to the deposition of bile pigments, the skin and eyes appear yellow.
Desquamate
This means to flake away easily (as with stratum corneum cells when they are lost from the surface of the skin.)
Carotene
This is a yellow to orange pigment obtained from the diet that can turn the skin a healthy shade of orange.
Testosterone
This is a male sex hormone or androgen that, when genes are present, stimulates the development of male pattern baldness.
Melanoma
This is the cancer of the skin’s melanocytes.
Lunula
This is the half-moon shaped area of the nail where the growing nail matrix is found.
Apocrine
This is a type of sweat gland association with musky body odor that is found in the armpit and anal regions.
Vibrissae
This is innervated hair which serves a sensory role; a.k.a. a whisker
Callus
This is the protective epidermal structure that forms in areas of heavy friction.
Heat exhaustion
This is when the body loses large amounts of water due to heat-loss mechanisms and suffers from muscle cramps, dizziness and nausea.
