Q

What is our operating model?

A

Prevention First is the national operating model for Police. It asks our people to be problem-solvers and look for opportunities to prevent further crime and
harm, rather than just respond to events – and to be proactive about these opportunities.

Q

What are our priorities?

A

Be first, then do, strengthening how and who we are as an organisation.
Deliver the service NZers expect and deserve.
Focused prevention through partnerships.

The Commissioner has set three priorities to help Police achieve success for
our organisation and our communities. They focus on creating the culture we
want, understanding and delivering the services our communities need, and
getting better outcomes through working with our partners. These priorities
will drive how we continue to evolve as an organisation.

Q

What do we want from our people?

A

The safety and wellbeing of our staff will always be our top priority. But to be truly successful, our people also need to feel valued and have a sense of ownership over the direction we are heading.
It’s important to understand each person’s unique circumstances and respond in a compassionate and reflective manner.

Q

What do we want from our leadership?

A

Leaders help create the environment in which everyone can thrive. People should feel safe at work and able to give their best every day. It’s leaders who enable that to occur by the culture they create in their teams. We want people to bring their real selves to work – they need to feel safe to be themselves in the work environment. Leadership is not about leading some while others get left behind – it’s about fostering an environment that brings out everyone’s best and in a way that they feel valued.

Q

What do we want from our culture?

A

we need a culture based on collective values,
which we reflect in our actions and decisions. It will take each of us playing
our part to contribute to shared outcomes for our communities.
We all need to be working together, in the interest of the organisation and
New Zealand. Bringing humanity to every interaction means we recognise
that no one is perfect and that we make mistakes. It is how we reflect on and
respond to these events that makes a difference.
