Why did Washington not accept African Americans at first? Did he change his policy later?
At first, he didn’t want to arm them with weapons because Southern owners feared revolts. Later on, he changed his policy.

The men enlisted for the army. The civilians and women (mostly women) helped keep their husband’s businesses open, cared for livestock, and some of the women disguised themselves as men to fight in the army.
