Valid Choices
Alternatives to telling a patient what to do, giving them a sense of self-determination and confidence by giving them choices.
Therapeutic communication
a process in which the health care professional consciously influences a client or helps the client to a better understanding through verbal/nonverbal communication.
Aphasia
Defined as a defect or loss of language function
(Unable to speak effectively)
Electrolarynx
A tool for those who cannot otherwise talk (handheld device)
Chronic
Persistent or lasting
Ageism
Discriminatory attitude toward the elderly that includes belief that all elderly are ill, disabled, worthless, and unattractive
Diagnosis
Identification of condition
Prognosis
Prediction of outcome related to a diagnosis
Hospice
A service to facilitate the end of life. Used when a physician determines a patient is unlikely to live for longer than 6 months.
