Chapter 6 Object Recognition Flashcards
What is a gnostic unit?
A neuron that can recognise a complex object
What is a grandmother cell?
The theory that a single cell is responsible for recognition of familiar people, like your grandmother
What does Halle Berry have to do with cognitive neuroscience?
She is the example used in a theory by Fried and co where, in contrast to the grandmother cell theory, they hypothesise that it is more likely that the cell represents the name which is then recalled from memory for any of the relevant stimuli associated with Halle Berry
What is the ensemble hypothesis in relation to object recognition?
The theory that object recognition results from activation across complex feature detectors where one cell responds to shape, one to colour, and one each to all features of a face
What is the difference between memory loss and visual agnosia?
People with visual agnosia are unable to recognise an object when looking at it alone however they touch the object they can recognise it straight away, their memory is fine, recognition is the problem
What is apperceprive agnosia?
Difficulty in recognising objects that are viewed from unusual orientation eg from the back or even when they are in shadow
What is integrative agnosia?
Inability to integrate features into parts or parts of an object into a whole eg picture depicting two diamonds and a circle, patients are unable to recognise the shapes but can replicate the image in a drawing
What is associative agnosia?
A failure to recognise the function of object while retaining the ability to perceive them
What is prosopagnosia?
An impairment in facial recognition eg the man who thought his wife was a hat, he could only recognise her when she had her hat on
What is akinetopsia?
The inability to perceive movement
What is blindsight?
When the PVC is damaged (cortically blind) patients retain the ability to see some movement
What are the two major object recognition pathways?
Ventral stream which travels along the inferior longitudinal fasciculus and is known as the what pathway
Dorsal stream which travels along the superior longitudinal fasciculus and is known as the where pathway
