Chapter 6 Mechanical Properties Flashcards
What is Hooke’s Law?
σ = const. x Strain
What is stress?
measure of what a materials feels from externally applied forces (σ)
What is strain?
Deformation of a material from stress (ε)
What is the formula for tensile stress (σ)?
σ= (instantaneous tensile load applied perpendicular (⊥) to original cross sectional area) / (original cross sectional area)
OR σ=F(t) / A(o) in N/m^2
OR Hooke’s Law
What is Hooke’s law?
σ= cont. x strain
aka Spring Force = spring constant x spring stretch or compression
OR
F(s) = k*x
Which type of strain is ε>0? Why?
Tensile strain (lengthining). If ε = δ / L(0), then δ is positve, bc that means it’s getting longer
What is the equation for strain? (ε )
strain = change of length due to deformation / Length before deformation
OR
ε =
Which type of strain is ε<0? Why?
Compressive (shortening). If ε = δ / L(0), then δ is negative, bc that means it’s getting shorter
What is the Young Modulus?
The stiffness of a material
What is the equation for Young’s Modulus?
YM= stress/ strain
OR
YM =σ/ε
What does ‘elastic deformation’ mean?
In short: Elastic means reversible
In long: ability of a deformed material body to return to its original shape and size when the forces causing the deformation are removed
What does ‘plastic deformation’ mean?
Plastic deformation is permanent. Deformed plastic releases stress and atoms move breaking bonds with original neighbors, and reform bonds with new atoms in a different location
What is yeilding?
When stress is too much and plastic deformation starts to occur
What is the point of yeilding?
the initial
departure from the linearity of the
stress-strain curve.
What is yield strength?
the stress at a strain
offset of ε(plastic)=0.2%
What is tensile strength?
Maximum stress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before failing or breaking.
What is fracture strength?
The stress at fracture?
What is ductility?
A measure of the degree of plastic deformation that has been sustained at fracture. Large % of elongation
What does it mean for a material to be brittle?
When a material fractures with little to no deformation. It’ll just break, like glass. Small % of elongation, like under 5%
What is toughness? How can it be measured?
Energy to break a unit volume of material, can be approximated by the area under the line in a strain stress curve
