Chapter 6 Math 6th Flashcards
Algebra
a language of symbols including variables
Variable
is a symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number.
Base
the number used as a factor.
exponent
tells how many times a base is used as a factor.
powers
numbers expressed using exponents.
perfect squares
Numbers like 100 are perfect squares because they are the squares of whole numbers.
numerical expression
like 3 times 2 + 4 times 4 is a combination of numbers
and operations.
Algebraic expression
contain at least one variable and at least one operation.
evaluate
once the variables have been replaced you can find the value of the algebraic expression.
Order of operations
tells you which operation to perform first so that everyone finds the same value for an expression.
defining the variable
in the second step choose a variable and decide what
it represents.
communicative property
The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied
does not change their sum or product.
associative property
the way in which three are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change their sum or product.
Identity properties
The sum of an addend and 0 is the addend. The product
of a factor and 1 is the factor.
properties
are statements that are true for any number.
