Chapter 6: Maps Flashcards
An absolute position on a map using coordinates of longitude and latitude
Location
A method for determining the map location of a point from knowing the distance between that point and three other points
Triangulation
The location of one object in relation to another
Direction
An instrument containing a magnetized needle that shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings from it
Compass
Figure on a map for displaying locations of north, south, east, west
Compass Rose
The direction along the earth’s surface towards the geographic North Pole
True North
The direction of the needle in a compass points
Magnetic North
Angle between True North and Magnetic North
Magnetic Declination
The location of a place between the north and South Pole relative to the equator. These are parallel lines that run east and west buy measure north and south of the equator
Latitude
The location of a place relative to the Prime Meridian. These lines are half circles. They run NORTH and SOUTH measure EAST and WEST of the prime meridian
Longitude
Height of a feature measured relative to sea level
Elevation
The study of the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical feature of an area
Topography
The difference in elevation between the highest and lower points Ina region; AKA Terrain
Relief
A 2- dimensional representation of earth’s surface
Map
A method for representing part of the surface of the earth or a celestial sphere on a plane surface
Projection
A cylindrical projection that was developed for navigation purposes
Mercator Projection
A projection based on a cone which either touches the surface the surface of the globe in a circle, or interests the globe in two circles, passing through it
Conic Projection
A projection that transforms all or part of the spherical surface onto a plane based on one point of contact w/ the globe
Gnomonic (planer) projection
Two dimensional representations of earth’s three dimensional surface using contour lines to indicate elevation
Topographic Map
An imaginary line on the surface of the earth connecting points of equal elevation
Contour line
The difference in elevation between any two adjacent contour lines
Contour Interval
Every FOURTH or FIFTH contour line on a map which is BOLD and LABELED
Index contour
A closed contour in which the find is at a lower elevation than than the outside. The closed loop will have hachure marks on the inside of the loop
Depression Contour
A point on a map where the elevation is given to the nearest foot and a bronze disk is placed at the location
