Groups and Organizations
aggregate
A collection of people who exist in the same place at the same time, but who do not interact or share a sense of identity
group
any collection of at least two people who interact with some frequency and who share some sense of aligned identity
social interaction
involves two or more people taking one another into account
category
people who share similar characteristics but who are not connected in any way. ex. millennial
primary groups
generally face to face in long term ways. plays critical role in ones life.
secondary groups
large, impersonal, task focused, time-limited. instrumental function in ones life, not emotionally oriented.
in group
a group in which a person feels they belong to.
out group
group in which someone does not belong to. Often they will feel disdain or competition with this group.
Reference Group
group that people compare themselves to. It often provides a standard of measurement.
Normative Organization (voluntary organization)
Based on shared interests. Typically people will find membership rewarding.
Coercive Organization
pushed or forced to join this type of organization. ex. prison or rehab.
Utilitarian Organizations
Join because of need for specific material rewards. Ex. school or work.
Max Weber Ideal Type
Enables us to see aspects of real world in clearer, more systematic way. ex. bureaucracies
